THINGS TO DO IN MANCHESTER WHEN IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

THINGS TO DO IN MANCHESTER WHEN IT’S COLD
As we head into winter and start spending more time inside, I’ve been thinking about how to keep my mind busy and my creative impulses satisfied.
Creativity doesn’t have to mean painting a masterpiece or even knowing what you’re doing. It’s about trying a new idea, working with your hands and cutting out the noise, maybe learning a new skill. The best part is at the end you’ll have made something from nothing.
With that in mind, here are a few workshops for the Manchester area that have caught my eye. They’re easy to book, beginner-friendly, and a great way to spend a dark evening. They also make a great Christmas gift.
Ceramics workshop

Frida Cooper is one of my neighbours at Pollard Yard studio, where she’s created the cosiest little pottery space. Her two-hour class covers the basics of hand building. You’ll come out with a pinch pot and coaster using this most traditional of techniques.
All tools are provided, and your fully glazed pieces will be ready to collect a few days after the session. Book a private class or go with friends or colleagues.
Jewellery workshop

Sken Studios is an independent, sustainable jewellery brand based in Sale. This three and-a-half-hour workshop with founder Sabira will teach you the art of wax carving, which you’ll use to create your own ring or pendant. Once you’re done, Sabira casts your design in solid silver, polishes it, and posts it out to you. This is a thoughtful, hands-on way of making something completely unique.
Life drawing workshop

Life Drawing With Hop’s “Create & Connect” sessions are art socials that celebrate the human form in all its variety. The relaxed group sessions are for experienced artists or the curious. There are no rules or pressures. Stick figures or abstract shapes are welcome too. Boards, pencils, charcoal, and paper are provided but feel free to bring your own.
Spoon carving workshop

Studio Critical is a wood shop run by Nick, an artisan known for crafting the most beautiful hand-carved objects from wood salvaged from local fallen trees. In his great introductory lesson in spoon carving, you’ll start off with a wooden block, some simple tools, and come out with something useful for your home.
Pottery painting workshop

Space Studio MCR are running BYOB pottery sessions in Ancoats where you’ll paint and decorate your old pots. Space Studio workshops are relaxed and easy going, ideal for adults and groups, so why not round up a few friends and make an evening of it.
Candle making and aromatherapy workshop

Lastly, I’ve got to mention my own workshops at Cedar Apothecary. I run small, hands-on candle making and perfume blending sessions in the Northern Quarter. They’re about exploring scent, learning about aromatherapy, and making something personal to take home. I host private groups, birthdays, hen-do’s, even the odd team day.
That’s your lot. I hope you enjoy one or all of these sessions. At heart they’re all about doing something positive, meeting good people and making something to use or gift. You never know, you might discover your secret talent or calling!
